To return all the love and support he’s been receiving over the past six years, Elvin Ng took time off his work schedule and planned a special surprise for his fan club. It was a one-of-a-kind fan club gathering that involved frogs, catfishes and turtles.
His ninth gathering with the fan club, Elvin brought them on a mini-excursion to Chinatown where they purchased live eels, frogs, turtles and catfishes, and set them free into the lake at Chinese Garden on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Buddhists believe this is an act of compassion and kindness to all animals.
In a phone interview with xinmsn, Elvin, who just turned 31 two days ago, chuckled as he recalled, “They got a shock when I brought them to the fish market. Everyone went ‘Huh?’ and it felt a little anti-climatic. I thought it was not going to work out ‘cos I didn’t expect the reaction. (Laughs)”
After reassuring fans that he has done his research and that the animals “will survive”, Elvin shared that they carried on with their plans despite the relentless showers.
He sheepishly added, “I want to apologise to them as they were all drenched in the rain. They were all a bit wet and had to take the MRT back. I didn’t have a contingency plan. (Chuckles)”
The Unriddle 2 actor said that he learned of this meaningful deed during a trip in Thailand and decided to pass it on to his fans.
“I just wanted to do something meaningful. As our gatherings are always held near my birthday every year, they will always give me gifts and cards, but this time round, I want to encourage people to do something different and meaningful.
“I think if I threw another surprise again, nobody will want to attend the gathering,” he laughingly quipped.
Sharing his experience at the Chinese Garden, Elvin fondly recalled, “There was a turtle, it didn’t go into the water when I set it free and instead ran back into the plastic bag! And there were also 10 frogs we set free. Some leapt into the water and some lingered on the surface. Before we left, I aaw 10 pairs of eyes floating in the water and it felt as if they were saying bye and thank you.”
Audrey, the fan club president of Elvinology shared that everyone was shocked when they were brought to the fish market in Chinatown.
“The aftermath was that we all chipped in a small amount each and Elvin chipped in about $100+. We bought live eels, turtles, catfishes, frogs for a good deed and released them in the big lake in the Chinese Garden.”
Recounting the initial reaction he received from fans when he told them of his plans, Elvin chuckled, “I began to question myself to see if I was doing the right thing when I saw their shocked and puzzled faces.”
Currently filming Unriddle 2, Elvin shared that he met his fan club immediately after work. Though it was “shocking” and “rushed”, Elvin hoped to pass on and share these meaningful deed with them.
Due to his tight schedule, Elvin met his fan club members again on the following day for a second gathering. This time round it invovled an Amazing Race-style treasure hunt.
Instead of the usual gatherings which usually takes place in a function room, Elvin shared that the organizers split the members into groups of 10, which allowed him to enjoy a closer interaction with fans.
“At each gathering, everyone would ask me ‘What’s my name. What’s my name?’ This upclose interaction means it is easier for me to remember their names! (Laughs) I think I’m doing quite a good job at remembering their names.”
